Are You Growing, or Just Efforting?
When it comes to personal growth and self-improvement, I am one of those people who can’t wait to jump in. I love the idea of always having a something to work on within myself. I started this website out of my belief that the bettering of art can only come through the bettering of the artist. As an actor, you cannot create a better performance until you have improved upon yourself as a person. Another way of putting this is, growth onstage cannot exist with out growth offstage.
I want to say as little as possible about this topic right now, because I want to refer you guys to an article that says it better than I could and give my full coverage of it in my next update. Steve Pavlina, the internet personal growth “guru” has written an article about Self-Help Junkies.
Steve’s “Self-Help Junkies” are those people who read the books and go to seminars, but never use the information they have, claiming that their growth is inner growth only and not outer growth. Pavlina says that you can’t have one without the other.
Normally this isn’t the type of article I’d refer on this website, but it really rang true for me when I thought about personal growth’s effect on our art. Many actors believe that they don’t have to expand themselves to expand their talent and I’m here to tell you that you must. You cannot grow your talent, until you grow yourself. Give Steve’s article a read and see what you think. Am I right, or am I just full of it?
Can you be a better actor without being a better person? Can your talent be developed by sitting in a classroom or reading a book, without developing yourself?

What you say is true, we need to develop ourselves and not just the inner part. In other words, we can’t just absorb all the content but take action of what we have learnt. We need to apply and seek results and make noticeable results.
Thanks

Penn & teller have a nice show about that-kind of self-help.
They bust bullshit self-help (firewalking, hypnosis etc), but happen to mention the addiction, “buff” factor too
