Finding Unsurpassed Success by Getting Out of Your Own Way
“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”
–Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Do you find yourself stuck under what seems to be a glass ceiling in your career? Do you find yourself being held back from new opportunities? The reason behind this leash on your success could be you. You are holding you back in your endeavors, but there is an easy way out. By simply taking a long, hard look at your own desires, you can raise the level of your success. You have installed barriers in your subconscious that are restricting you. Remove the mental blocks in your mind that keep your from the unlimited success you desire and watch how your growth will soar. No one walks around thinking to themselves how wonderful it would to be mediocre. No one goes to an interview or audition thinking how marvelous it would be if they weren’t hired. The mental blocks in your head have not been created on purpose; they’ve merely developed by default as you experience years of the same level of success.
When I talk about mental blocks and barriers, I don’t mean a physical limitation for success. These mental barriers are the levels of comfort that your subconscious has grown accustomed to. If you find that there is a glass ceiling to the money you can make, it is because you are not comfortable with making more. If you find that you cannot get the better jobs you want, the reason is that you are not comfortable with receiving those jobs.
“But of course I want more money!” you say. And I’m sure that’s true. We all want more money; we all want that better job that will help us achieve more of what we desire. We all want those things, but have you truly come to grips with all of the new fears that come with these desires? More money means a hire tax bracket, more chances to loose it all, more chances that one day it will run out, that we’ll have to hire someone to help us and what if they can’t be trusted? You see what I mean? If you aren’t comfortable with those ideas, you’re mentally keeping financial success away from you. If you desire to get a better audition, but find that you’re unsure of your own talent, or are afraid to handle a role that big, you’re placing a limit on yourself. Think of these blocks like the restrictor plates on a racecar, you may only go as quickly as this plate allows you to go, but with that plate removed you can go as fast as you wish.
So how can we remove these barriers? How can we say to ourselves and to the Universe that we are ready for something better than that which we are used to? The first step is a little soul searching. Sit down in a quiet, relaxing moment and close your eyes. Imagine what it is you want more of. If you want more money imagine having the amount you wish to have and then spend sometime analyzing how you feel about having that money. The basic goal here is to discover what your barriers are. Discover where you’ve become complacent.
Once you’ve labeled your complacently, you have to reignite the spark of desire in them and the only way to do that it to confront them. If you don’t make as much money as you wish, it is because you have lost a true desire to do so. If you have lost out on those dream roles you wanted, it is because you have lost the true desire to have them. You have simply become too comfortable with where you are to want to move. We all do it and have all done it for centuries. Spend time each day confirming to yourself that you will be able to exceed your expectations when presented with these complacencies.
Everyone has the possibility to have what they desire, but first we must learn the lesson given to us by F.M. Alexander in his movement teachings: Get Out of Your Own Way. People have the strangest habit of getting in their own way. We sabotage what we think we want because somewhere inside of us, we are afraid to achieve it. Begin going deeper into yourself and finding where you have lost your drive and once found, push it to strive harder and farther than ever before. You cannot rid yourself of that glass ceiling, but you can raise it higher and higher with every push.
Go raise that ceiling and claim your success. I believe in your unsurpassed success as actors, thespians and humans. Remember, onstage and off, your choices are everything. Sin Bodly!
